The route

What Direct Access is

Direct Access is the route straight to a bigger-bike licence without holding a smaller one for two years first: an A2 licence from 19, or a full, unrestricted category A licence from 24. For the full licence you train for and take your Module 1 and Module 2 tests on a big bike, our Honda CB650F. Pass both and the restrictions are gone: any size of motorcycle, a passenger on the back, motorways.

You need to be 24 or over to take a full category A licence by Direct Access. From 21 the same licence is available by progressive access, if you have held an A2 licence for at least two years. Under 24 and without two years on an A2? Then A1 or A2 is the licence to take now, and our A1 and A2 training follows the same shape: training, then Module 1 and Module 2 on a bike that matches the licence you are taking.

Before your course

Four things to have in place.

  • A valid CBT certificateThe DL196 you get at the end of CBT motorcycle training. It lasts two years; if yours has run out, book a CBT day with us first.
  • A motorcycle theory test passYou have to pass the theory test before you can take Module 1, so book it early. Hazard perception is part of it.
  • A licence with provisional motorcycle entitlementDVSA's route chart asks for a valid licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement. Check yours on gov.uk (View your driving licence) or ask Sally when you book.
  • The right kit on the dayAsk Sally what to bring and wear when you book and she will tell you exactly.

What you get

What the Direct Access course includes

The course is built around the two practical tests. Everything in it is there to make test day feel like one more day of training.

01

Four or five days of training

Which depends on your experience and riding ability, and one of the days is your test day. Sally talks it through with every rider and advises the length before you book.

02

Module 1 and Module 2 test training

The off-road manoeuvres (Module 1) and the road ride (Module 2).

03

Test fees included

The Module 1 and Module 2 test fees are in the price. If you need a retest, that fee is yours to pay.

04

Time on the MMA

The Motorcycle Manoeuvring Area is the official test centre exam area. Riding the real layout before test day is what makes Module 1 feel like another day of training.

The bike

You ride our Honda CB650F, and the bike hire is included in the price. For a full category A licence your Module 1 and Module 2 tests have to be taken on a motorcycle of at least 595cc and 50kW, so Direct Access means riding a big bike, not a 125.

Mod 1

Off road · about 20 minutes

Off-road manoeuvres on a test pad — manual handling, slow control, a slalom and figure of eight, a U-turn, cornering, a controlled stop, and the emergency stop & hazard-avoidance swerve. Your training includes practice on the actual test site.

  • The emergency stop and the hazard avoidance are ridden at a minimum of 31 mph (50 km/h).
  • You pass with no serious or dangerous faults and no more than five riding faults.

Mod 2

On road · about 40 minutes

An eyesight check and a couple of safety questions, then around 40 minutes of on-road riding with a DVSA examiner — normal road riding plus a section of independent riding.

  • An eyesight check (a number plate from 20 metres), two vehicle safety questions, then road riding including about 10 minutes of independent riding.
  • You pass with no serious or dangerous faults and no more than ten riding faults. You have to pass Module 1 before you can take Module 2.

Another way to do it

Split your Mods

Instead of one course with both tests at the end, you can take Module 1 and Module 2 as two shorter courses a little apart. Stan and Sally have found riders who split their Mods pass more often, and say it feels far less pressured.

  • Each module includes the bike hire and the test fee; Module 1 also includes time on the MMA, and you get some Module 2 road training riding to and from it.
  • If you do not pass Module 1, you do not lose a Module 2 test fee, because that test is booked later.
  • Riders tell Stan and Sally it feels far less pressured, and it can work out more cost-effective.

Sally will give you a straight price for each module when you call. 07432 482690

Step 1

Module 1 first

Usually two days of training, then your Module 1 test. With the road ride out of the picture you can concentrate on the controlled riding skills the off-road test is about.

Step 2

Module 2 a little later

Another two days of training, then your Module 2 test. The test routes are covered during the training days, at Exeter or Barnstaple.

Which licence

Where

Where the course runs

Everything starts at North Tawton Rugby Club in Mid Devon, our DVSA-approved training site. There is no second base, and we would rather say so plainly: riders come to us from Okehampton and Crediton, from Exeter (around 40 minutes), from Barnstaple (around 45 minutes) and from across Devon.

Your Module 1 test is taken at the Exeter test centre, the nearest to us, and Module 2 at Exeter or Barnstaple. The time on the official manoeuvring area is there so the test centre is familiar ground by the time it counts.

What riders say after their tests

“The first thing I liked was this company communicates. I took Mod 1 & 2, passing both, training with both Stan and Chris … I’d be the first to admit I’m not an easy student. No problem: these guys are so good. While completing the test was the objective, they made me a “rider” … fluid, confident and safe. Well done also to Sally, top admin. Thanks for some of the best days of my life.”
Michael Flint · Google
“Recently completed my CBT … along side my 16 year old son … I chose to book in … to gain my full bike license. Sally quickly found a date that suited me and today I passed my Mod 1, thanks to the expert tuition from Stan … 2 days relaxed yet professional training … Highly recommended!”

“Stan instructed me through my training and got me through my Mod 1 & 2. Was a pleasure spending the time with this absolute legend … extremely knowledgeable, professional and patient. Couldn’t recommend him enough.”

Common questions

Direct Access questions

What is a Direct Access motorcycle course?

Direct Access, or DAS, is the route straight to a bigger-bike licence without holding a smaller one for two years first: an A2 licence from 19, or a full category A licence from 24. For the full A licence you complete CBT motorcycle training, pass the motorcycle theory test, then take Module 1 and Module 2 on a bike of at least 595cc. Our 4 or 5 day courses go toward an A1, A2 or full licence, with the tests at the end and the test fees included.

How long does a DAS course take?

Our Direct Access courses run over 4 or 5 days, with the Module 1 and Module 2 tests at the end. Which length suits you depends on your experience and riding ability, and one of the days is your test day, so Sally talks it through with every rider before booking and advises the course length. The training and the tests are the same whether you are going for an A1, an A2 or a full A licence.

Do I need a CBT and a theory test before Direct Access?

Yes to both. Direct Access is CBT, theory and practical. Your CBT certificate has to be valid (it lasts two years), and you have to pass the motorcycle theory test before you can take Module 1. If your CBT has run out, book a CBT day with us first and go on from there.

Can I do Direct Access at 21?

Not for a full category A licence: Direct Access to category A starts at 24. At 21 you can take an A2 licence directly (Direct Access to A2 is open from 19: CBT, the theory test, then Module 1 and Module 2 on an A2 bike). After two years on an A2 you can step up to the full licence by progressive access, with one further practical test. We train for A2, so ring Sally and she will tell you which route suits you.

What does "test fees included" cover?

The Module 1 and Module 2 test fees. If you do not pass, the retest fee is yours to pay. One thing to know: if both modules are booked for the same day and Module 1 is not passed, Module 2 cannot go ahead and that fee is lost too, because test slots are paid for in advance and cannot be passed to another rider.

What bike will I ride on the Direct Access course?

Our Honda CB650F, and the bike hire is included in the price. For a full category A licence the test has to be taken on a motorcycle of at least 595cc and 50kW, so you will be on a big bike rather than a 125.

Where will I take my Module 1 and Module 2 tests?

Module 1 at the Exeter test centre, the nearest one to us. Module 2 at Exeter, or sometimes Barnstaple. The course includes time on the official Motorcycle Manoeuvring Area so the layout is familiar before test day.

Is the Direct Access test hard?

Module 1 is a set of manoeuvres on a marked area and Module 2 is about 40 minutes of road riding with an examiner. Neither is designed to catch you out, but both reward practice: Module 1 allows no more than five riding faults and Module 2 no more than ten, with no serious or dangerous faults in either. That is why the course includes time on the official manoeuvring area, so the layout is familiar before you ride it for real.

What can I ride after passing Direct Access?

Anything. A full category A licence has no engine size or power restriction, and the L plates come off. You can carry a passenger and use motorways, neither of which you can do on a CBT.

Can I take Module 1 and Module 2 as separate courses?

Yes. Instead of one course with both tests at the end, you can split your Mods: usually two days of training then the Module 1 test, and a little later another two days of training then the Module 2 test, with the test routes covered in training at Exeter or Barnstaple. Each module includes the bike hire and the test fee, and if you do not pass Module 1 you do not lose a Module 2 fee, because that test is booked later. Stan and Sally have found riders who split their Mods pass more often and feel far less pressured. Ask Sally for the price per module.

What if I need to cancel or move my Direct Access course?

Full payment is due 14 days before the course starts. Cancel with 14 full days' notice for a full refund or a new date; with less notice your booking moves to another date, and same-day cancellations or no-shows are not refunded. Deposits for A1, A2 and Direct Access are not refundable, because your test slots are bought before training starts. The full rules, including weather, are on our cancellations and refunds page.

How do I book a Direct Access course?

Call or text Sally on 07432 482690, or send a message from the contact section. Tell her where you are with your CBT and theory test and she will find dates that suit you. If a different course would serve you better, she will say so before you book.
